Bhubaneswar Custodial Abuse: A horrific incident at a Bhubaneswar police station has sent shock waves through the public and alarmed it, besides becoming a cause of concern for the highest rungs of state governance.
A bride, engaged to an Army officer, suffered some of the worst forms of mistreatment in police custody-an incident that has now snowballed into a critical re-examination of police behavior and demands severe disciplinary actions by those in authority. The shocking news was broken by The Hindu.

It was a dark night and the lady along with her fiancé who happened to be a Captain in the Sikh Regiment of the Indian Army, was returning home. Their night took a turn for the worse when they were intercepted by a gang of goons indulging in rash driving. To seek shelter and redress, the couple met up with the Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar. Expecting protection and relief, the couple instead landed in a nightmare scenario.
The couple found the officers on duty very lethargic at the station. One of the female constables, attired particularly in casuals, hardly made any eye contact or reached out to them. The woman is also a practicing attorney and so explained the acts of physical and verbal violence at the hands of the officers. As a lawyer herself, she had initially felt empowered enough to insist that the police take action, but it was actually met with aggression from the latter. She said that when they raised their call for protection, the issue became even more violent and stayed that way.
Without provocation, she was dragged, assaulted, and bound by the very officers who were entrusted with her protection. In one of the most shocking disclosures, she revealed that the male officer physically assaulted her and sexually harassed her in the police cell, far away and unapproachable to those least in power.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi stated, in an interview with The Hindu : “My government is carefully watching the course of investigation, ensuring that there are no holds barred and that it is free and fair.” He assured that when the guilty were identified, they will face the harshest penalties as made possible under law. All the implicated officers were suspended swiftly enough, indicating the seriousness of the administration towards justice and accountability.
Legal Proceeding and Public Response
She lodged a detailed complaint with the Crime Branch of Odisha Police after this ordeal. The legal system responded very rapidly; Orissa High Court granted bail to the woman and mentioned in a very serious vein its concerns about police misconduct.
